Relational modelling is the approach of managing data using a structure in a tabular format, resulting in a Relational Data Model. This modelling approach has been used for over 20 years to understand the business data and ultimately store data in relational SQL based databases.

While most users think of relational models as being one step prior to database deployment there is a number of non-direct database deployment models

  • Canonical Data Model - these still follow the traditional relational constructs, but would never be physically implemented in a database in the modeled form
  • Conceptual Data Model - these are higher level models to articulate to the business the understanding of the data modeler. These are sufficiently high level that they bridge the gap between IT and the business.
