Semantic modelling is the new approach to organizing data, and is based on a fact based approach.
The following terms and concepts are core to Semantic modelling:
- Controlled Vocabulary - A collection of terms given a well-defined meaning that is consistent across in-scope contexts.
- Ontology - Allows you to define contextual relationships for the vocabulary. It is the cornerstone of defining a knowledge domain. A formal syntax for defining ontologies is OWL.
This style of modelling is more focused on information and its various relationships, rather than the more traditional Data Modelling.
